The Lounge
Written by Joey Levene and Evan Doyle
The lounge is a place where our young people go to watch TV and movies on the height adjustable TV. Our young people can also socialise and play on all the many different gaming consoles we have to offer – including the PS4, the Xbox One, and the Nintendo Switch. The lounge has comfy reclining couches and bean bags to chill out on with a variety of board games to play. The lounge space is very multifunctional, for example it is sometimes turned into a sensory space. Its is also very inclusive as there is a built-in hoist on the ceiling.
The cinema

The Cinema at Derian House serves as a haven where children and their families can momentarily escape the challenges and stresses associated with life-limiting conditions. The room is thoughtfully designed to emulate the atmosphere of a real cinema, complete with comfortable seating, a large screen, and surround sound. It offers a safe and inclusive space where children can relax, laugh, and immerse themselves in the magic of movies, transporting them to worlds beyond their immediate reality.
Derian House organises regular movie nights and special screenings in the Cinema Room, creating memorable experiences for the children and their families. These events are carefully curated, taking into consideration the diverse interests and age groups of the children. From animated classics to the latest releases, the selection of films ensures that everyone can find something to enjoy. The Cinema Room becomes a gathering place, where families can come together and share moments of joy, laughter, and connection.
For children who may be confined to hospital beds or who face limited mobility, the Cinema Room offers a sense of normalcy and freedom. Within the walls of this space, children can momentarily forget their medical challenges and immerse themselves in the enchanting world of storytelling. The immersive experience provided by the Cinema Room allows them to temporarily escape their reality and find respite in the simple pleasure of watching a movie.
The Cinema Room also fosters an environment for shared experiences and bonding among families. Watching a film together creates opportunities for parents, siblings, and extended family members to come together, creating lasting memories and strengthening their relationships.
The Lodge kitchen

I really enjoy cooking and baking, and it’s great that it’s something I can do when I go to Derian. You can raise the countertops to where you like, which is great. I enjoy measuring out ingredients. When I’m baking I like using the whisk. Sometimes Mel holds it and I guide it – and then I like to eat the batter.
